Our design proposal locates the Museum as a ‘Crannog’ – literally an artificial island sitting in the water and comprises of a 5 storey building with an efficient footprint keeping foundations and external envelope to a minimum. Our proposal promotes the idea of a large open-air promenade through the heart of the building with a framed view of the river directly ahead. A circular route around the centre of the building allows the visitor to enjoy an ever-changing experience. A promenade along the south-west edge of the museum looking out across the water and enjoying an open and sunny orientation then returns through the heart of the building, protected from the rain with framed views back to Discovery and with the café, foyer and bar offering activity along all edges. The upper part of the building is cloaked in a ‘lantern’ of translucent, scalloped, pre-cast glass. This acts as a unifying element whilst also performing as a rain-screen and environmental buffer to the accommodation. Our proposal positions the largest gallery spaces at the top of the building as a culmination of the visitors experience as they make their journey through the Museum. Positioned at the top of the building, Galleries 1 and 2 have maximum flexibility both structurally and spatially and also have the potential to be naturally day-lit if desirable. The reading of the building is of a series of layers – both in plan and in elevation – lending the building depth.
