description |
community centre in collieston
- The building’s layout is influenced by the traditional
castle plan where the main chamber is cradled in the centre
of the plan surrounded by smaller servant spaces. In this case
the hall, a double height space, is surrounded by support spaces
such as the café
meeting room and winter garden, insulating the hall from the
outer world. By wrapping 2 storeys of accommodation around the
hall the building is given an appropriate scale on all four
sides and generates facades which are animated and varied.Key
spaces open onto a winter garden which acts as an environmental
buffer providing protection from the wind and acting as a solar
harvester in the winter months. The general day to day patterns
of use can be easily and quickly accommodated through simple
sliding folding screens. Pocketed doors and blinds allow the
hall to change easily from a cinema to a sports hall to banquet
space.
