This project was a limited competition and SHA worked in collaboration with Pansolution and Tsinghua University. The brief was for a traditional western Opera House, located in the Central Beijing business district. The requirements included a 1350 seat auditorium with the requisite backstage facilities, a multi purpose hall for 650 seats that was capable of putting on chamber orchestra performances and a number of rehearsal rooms for all disciplines (piano, dance, band and orchestra). The Director of the Opera House was particularly interested in the traditional Opera House and its neo-classical architectural tradition and SHA were asked to develop the design along these themes.
