description Invited competition 2010 . The insertion of a new structure into Room 127 explores how light affects our appreciation of space and the activities we experience. Whether within an external or internal environment light brings a space to life, is a moving dimension and a connection with time and the seasons. It is proposed that a delicate canopy hovers above the visitor allowing natural and projected light to filter through and across the layers of structure casting localised areas of dark and light. The stairwell and landing will become animated with the changing patterns of shadow creating an ambience reminiscent of the dappled light experienced through a woodland walk. Concealed projectors allow directional light or images of the sky to be projected through the canopy structure onto the ceiling and walls beyond. The canopy is 4.6m wide x 10.5 length and is constructed from zig-zag profiled beams which sit parallel to one another at 100mm centres. These beams are tied by steels rods and span between two steel frames supported down into a heavy base/seat.
